Hoarding Disorder: Research & Ethics Related to Treatment

Conference Description:  The treatment of hoarding disorder is an ethically complex endeavour for any treatment professional. Join us for this two-day conference that will provide participants with treatment skills and tools from one of Canada’s leading researchers Dr. Karen Rowa. Hear the unique viewpoint of bioethics lawyer Mark Handelman discuss The Health Care Consent Act & Substitute Decision-Making Act as they relate to hoarding disorder. Attendees will
hear from a community panel of local service providers discuss their distinctive roles in treatment AND the privilege of listening to an individual with lived experience share her knowledge and perspective on hoarding disorder.

Karen Rowa, Ph.D., C.Psych.
 
Karen Rowa is a psychologist at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Clinic at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University.  She is also the Training Director of the Clinical Psychology Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, ON.  Dr. Rowa is active in education, clinical supervision, research, and clinical service focused on CBT for anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and hoarding disorder. Her current research focuses on the impact of safety behaviours on performance and likeability in social anxiety disorder, enhancing treatment outcomes for obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as the development of psychological ownership of possessions in hoarding disorder. 
Dr. Rowa has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, as well as two books in the area of anxiety disorders, hoarding disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.  She has supervised over 100 clinical learners and over 40 research students.  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Mark Handelman, B.A., LL.B., MHSc 
 
Mark Handelman was called to the Ontario Bar in 1978. Until 2001, hepractised law in London, Ontario, including civil litigation, criminal defence and prosecution. He was one of Ontario's first members of the Official Guardan Child Representation Program. Mark waappointed to the Consent & Capacity Board in 1998 and became a Vice Chair and Senior Lawyer Member in 2000. He became Acting Toronto Regional Vice Chair and then Regional Vice Chair in 2001, for which he stopped practising law and moved to Toronto. He was the Board's only Vice Chair for quality assurance and presided at about 2,000 Board Hearings—including the majority of the Board’s “end of life” cases. Mark’s term on the Board expired in 2008 and he is now in the private practice of health care law, representing health practitioners and facilities, SDMs and patients and advising and teaching health care providers. He was also a Lawyer Member of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal from 2008 to 2018.
 
Mark holds an MHSc in bioethics from the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics.  He was a member of the corporate ethics committees of both William Osler and Humber River Hospitals and wrote the first versions of the information brochure, “A Guide to Substitute Decision-Making” for both hospitals. His articles on mental health law and ethics, substitute decision-making and the end of life process have been published in various journals. He has given over 200 presentations to health practitioners on their legal and ethical obligations to patients under The Health Care Consent Act.

Tawnya Roberts is a Program Specialist with the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Inspection and Enforcement Unit. She joined Lanark Highlands Fire Service in 1999 as a volunteer fire fighter and served as a District Fire Chief from 2002 -2009 before joining the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management. A strong advocate of the power of fire prevention, for over 15 years she has provided dynamic leadership in shaping fire safety standard enforcement across Ontario by developing and delivering educational seminars and mitigation strategies to support fire service leaders in utilizing their extensive legislative powers to save lives. From mitigation of extreme hoarding situations, execution of entry warrants to addressing "Immediate Threat to Life" situations, Tawnya Roberts highlights the significant impact, purpose and strategies surrounding fire safety enforcement.

Session Overview:

Introduction to legislative enforcement powers and mitigation strategies that can be utilized to address serious fire and life safety issues; participants will gain an understanding of how inspections of building construction, use and maintenance can have significant impact on fire ground operations and pre planning activities as well as how they may support building closures processes and or "Immediate Threat to Life" situations.
