The Canadian Mental Health Association - Champlain East is a community-based agency dedicated to providing community support services to persons living with a mental illness and concurrent disorders.  Our Branch has been designated under the French Language Services Act since 1991 and as such, is committed to providing services in both official languages (French and English).

 Mental Health Promotor

 

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:         To initiate, coordinate and/or present mental health promotion activities designed to improve attitudes towards mental illness, promote mental health and prevent mental illness.

SALARY RANGE:                              $51,500 - $53,600 annually

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Requirements:

  • College diploma in Human Services, Social Services or B.A. in Education, Child / Youth Worker or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience and comfort level in developing and delivering presentations to the public, minimum 2 years
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of mental health and addictions
  • Familiarity with Recovery Philosophy and awareness of the needs of diverse communities is an asset
  • Good understanding of learning styles and delivery methods.
  • Knowledge of the social services and/or health field, including local resources.
  • Well organized and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (some evening and weekend hours may be required).

 

Language:

  • Proficiency in both official languages, a requirement as per the Branch’s French Language Designation Plan

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to organize time and prioritize tasks to achieve objectives, demonstrating organization, planning & coordination skills
  • Ability to deal tactfully with a diverse group of people internally and externally
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrates initiative when appropriate and is willing to learn new skills
  • Demonstrated ability to observe boundaries, engage in appropriate emotional regulation, refrain from dual relationships with clients/volunteers
  • Engage in reasonable self-care strategies that incorporate balancing work/life responsibilities
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION: 

  • Act as primary contact for mental health promotion activities of the branch.
  • Organize/deliver evidence-based workshops as defined by the Branch for students, community organizations, volunteer groups, professional groups and local businesses.
  • Link workshop participants to appropriate services/resources as required.
  • Work with and provide support and supervision to Branch volunteers involved in related program activities.
  • Develop and maintain a speaker’s bureau of people with lived experience as a strategy to challenge stigma and promote education. Support volunteer speakers in preparing and evaluating presentation materials to be reflective of recovery principles.
  • Plan and participate in special events and campaigns such as World Suicide Prevention Day, Mental Health Week and Mental Illness Awareness Week.
  • Coordinate media coverage to provide information to the public using resource materials, articles, workshops and events during awareness campaigns and throughout the year
  • In collaboration with the Admin team, provide Mental Health Promotion information for the Branch’s social media platforms
  • Participate in program sustainability initiatives such as fundraisers and other events
  • Market and negotiate fees for delivery of training packages to organizations and groups as feasible
